For instance, you can have an Vehicle category, then have Gas, Maintenance, and Fees and three subcategories. Each category will add a section to the left where you can define subcategories. You can define up to 15 basic categories of spending. There's a Setup sheet where you define up to 4 Accounts with starting balances. I'll share a basic budget workbook that I've been building. Daily may cause budget fatigue, while monthly would overwhelm most, cause confusion, and not allow for quick acknowledgment of bad habits. With this setup I find it best to update weekly. I have a separate sheet for the validation lists to allow for ease of adding new categories and sub categories if needed. I also have the rows change color based on if the charge has happened.įor the categories and sub categories I use dependent drop down lists to allow for clean tables on the overview tab. Maybe a low balance for checking/savings, or a high balance for credit. Conditional formatting is used to change the color of balances based on what I determine the threshold to be for each card. I also have columns to show next low balance and the date which that occurs, to help me look forward without having to scroll. For each sheet you’ll need to use the offset function for the balance column formula. I map out the upcoming years of charges, so every dollar is accounted for. I also have all line items automatically go to a hidden “master sheet” so I can create tables off the data on an overview tab. In the past I had one sheet that was a single checkbook for all my accounts, but ultimately found it too confusing when updating with a week of old charges across all accounts.Įach sheet I have is a “checkbook” with every charge/future charge (for a few years) listed. Personally I have sheets for each account (checking/credit/savings/Venmo/loans). Sounds like something similar to what I have.
